One Little Spark: Exploring the International Festival of the Arts (Part 1)

Posted by Patria Henriques on Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Who doesn’t love Figment? Since 1983, the little purple dragon has been teaching the world how, “One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation!” So, it makes sense that he would be the unofficial mascot of a festival dedicated to creativity. The International Festival of the Arts at Epcot is back, running until February 25. There’s a ton to do and see, with delicious food and fun activities featuring all kinds of artistic expression. It’s so big that I think we’ll spend a few weeks exploring everything there is to do. To get us started, here a few of the more whimsical highlights:

1. The Living Statues

Located at the Fountain Stage in Future World, these performance artists are painted in brilliant metallic colors. Each statue is inspired by Epcot. Stop by and snap a picture with them, but keep a close eye out. You just might see them come to life!

2. Sidewalk Chalk Art

Who doesn’t have fond memories of playing with sidewalk chalk? For the Festival of the Arts, screevers have created chalk masterpieces between Future World and the World Showcase. There are 3D chalk pieces that seem as alive as the pieces created by Bert in Mary Poppins. There are also 2D pieces to explore, each one a small masterpiece.

3. Hands on Wall Mural

Guests can indulge their inner Van Gogh by picking up a paintbrush and contributing to the paint-by-number mural located along the World Showcase Plaza. To participate, visit the booth beside the mural. You’ll pick up a small container of paint with a number on it and a paintbrush. Find the corresponding number on the mural and apply your paint.

4. Figment’s Brush With the Masters Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts have become a regular part of festivals at Epcot, and the Festival of the Arts is no exception. Guests can purchase a map at Pin Central, Disney Traders, or World Traveler. They are $6.99 plus tax and will guide you around the World Showcase in search of Figment. Add a sticker to your map each time you find him, and once you’ve completed the entire map you can take it to Disney Traders to receive a special prize.

5. Step Into a Painting

Some people are really into art. Well, now you can do be too! The Festival of the Arts offers guests the chance to step into some of the world’s most iconic paintings. In France, you can pose as part of Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Visit the America pavilion to appear in Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. In Italy, you can stand in The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and The Scream by Edvard Munch. A tribute to Frida Kahlo is located in the Mexico pavilion. There’s also a new for 2019 photo-op located in the United Kingdom: a chance to step into Peter Pan’s Neverland at Skull Rock. PhotoPass photographers are on hand to snap your picture, but you can also take your own.
