Qantas is giving away a crazy amount of points that will see one passenger fly or holiday for free for the next 20 years.

In a rare move, the airline is giving away 20 million points through its “Holiday for life” campaign. It is the biggest prize Qantas Frequent Flyers has ever offered its members.

Basically, members who book a hotel or holiday anywhere in the world through the Qantas Hotels and Holidays site, could be looking at an extra 20 million Qantas Points.

The lucky winner won’t get it all in one go. Instead, they will be given one million points every year for the next 20 years.

“One million Qantas Points every year could mean one extravagant annual holiday or multiple trips away each year for the lucky winner and their family,” a Qantas spokesperson told news.com.au.

Points expert Daniel Sciberras said it was a phenomenal amount of points for an airline to give away.

“That points scale is huge,” Mr Sciberras from Points Hack told news.com.au, adding that 867,600 Qantas points could get you two first class flights from Sydney to London. This excludes taxes, fees and carrier charges.

He also noted that while frequent flyer members loved to collect points, there were many who did not know how to spend them.

“Nowadays there’s so many different ways to earn points which means there’s so many people engaged in programs, but not everyone follows them as closely,” he said.

“You end up with a lot of people with quite high balances but don’t know what to do with the points or the best way to use it.”

Mr Sciberras noted, however, points seats aren’t always available when you want them and encouraged flexibility.

“If you want to get to London, why not use One World partner Japan Airlines,” he advised.

“Another popular route is Sydney to LA and if you’re a top tier member you have a higher chance of grabbing points seats, but it’s not always guaranteed as people are willing to pay cash.

“Using partner Fiji Airways to get to LA is another alternative. These (two routes) have more rewards seats but a lot of people don’t know about this and the winner of this 20 million giveaway may not know either.”

What exactly can you one million points get you

If you’re curious to learn what a million points a year can get you, there’s a vast variety — and it’s not just flights.

If you’re in need of a new phone, you can get an Apple iPhone 13 128GB on Qantas Marketplace, valued at $1229 for 225,100 points.

Meanwhile, if you’re hosting a party and need to stock up on alcohol, 988,178 will get you 71 bottles of Pommery Kosher Brut Royal Champagne NV on Qantas Wine. They’re valued at about $80 each.

If it’s training equipment, then 746,100 points can get you two Peloton Bikes on Qantas Marketplace.

As far as flights go, 867,200 points can see you travel from Melbourne to Los Angeles in business class four times a year but taxes, fees and carrier charges will be extra.

More Coverage

When it comes to hotels and resorts, 475,773 Qantas Points for two travellers will cover flights and a five-night stay for four guests in the Pool Villa Club at Bali Mandira Beach Resort and Spa.

A 37-day Wonders of the World bucket-list holiday with Qantas Tours is just shy of one million points at 929,900.

The competition closes on July 31.
